The Nuba Mountains is a region located in the South Kordofan state of Sudan. This area is not a single mountain range, but a group of isolated hills rising sharply from the plains. The rock formations and green plains are inhabited by indigenous ethnic groups speaking 50+ languages. While there are some Christians scattered throughout the region, Muslim and unknown religions also exist in an estimated population of over 1 million people. The Nuba Mountains expand 19,000 square miles [about the size of South Carolina] and the climate is very hot with a rainy season from mid-May to mid-October.  Water is scarce and most villages are connected by ancient paths, impassable by motor vehicle.
